My latest feature in easyJet Inflight magazine is all about Paganism - and it was great fun to write! It was a very new subject for me, and I was wondering what I'd would discover when writing the piece up. I think this feature for me just highlighted how much I really enjoy the opportunities in freelance writing to approach an entirely new subject and see it as a learning experience.
Not all new subjects I write about I have so much enthusiasm for, I have to admit. But I'm always interested in anything that is focused on other people's philosophies or attitudes to life (as opposed to writing about the workings of the steam engine, which thankfully I've never had to do).

For many freelancing newbies, there is nothing quite as daunting as picking up the telephone and speaking to...wait for it...an EDITOR! It's strange how when we're first starting in journalism it seems like the most impossible task in the world - but the sooner you do it, the better.
I liked this post I read entitled The Fine Art of Telephone Prospecting for Freelancers, which tackles that very subject and looks at some of the limiting beliefs people may have around their reasons to not pick up the phone.

A journalist I know, Ellie Levenson, has set up a new small business offering training in London to both experienced and new freelance journalists. Her website, Journalist Training provides details of the courses, dates and prices, with the next course being Freelancing for Beginners on Tuesday October 2nd 2007 costing £65.
Ellie is an experienced freelance journalist writing for a range of newspapers and magazines and also teaches journalism at Goldsmiths College, University of London.
