For many freelancing newbies, there is nothing quite as daunting as picking up the telephone and speaking to...wait for it...an EDITOR! It's strange how when we're first starting in journalism it seems like the most impossible task in the world - but the sooner you do it, the better.
I liked this post I read entitled The Fine Art of Telephone Prospecting for Freelancers, which tackles that very subject and looks at some of the limiting beliefs people may have around their reasons to not pick up the phone.
And one thing to remember is that editors are just people like you and me. As long as you pick your times carefully (the day of going to press is not a good one), ask politely whether the editor has five minutes to talk to you or whether you should call back, and know what it is you want to say, then you you will be fine - and the more you do it, the more confident you will get!
